Advicenow volunteer internship

Advicenow are now offering a volunteer internship for 4-8 weeks

The Advicenow volunteer internship provides the opportunity to develop your communication, research, and project management skills, and to gain experience of working on a public-facing website.

About ASA and Advicenow

Advice Services Alliance (ASA) is the representative body for advice and information services in the UK. ASA works with its membership and government to develop policy on delivery of legal and advice services and champions the development of high quality information.

ASA's Advicenow website brings together the best information on rights and the law available on the internet, and produces its own innovative and attractive information on a wide range of rights issues. Advicenow also works to improve the quality of rights and legal information available to the public by developing resources for information providers.

Person specification

We are looking for people who have a commitment to increasing public knowledge and awareness of rights and the law, and who are able to communicate complex legal information clearly, interestingly, and in plain English.
A general understanding of rights and the law is an advantage but this role does not require detailed legal knowledge.

You do not need any previous experience of providing information for the public or experience of working on a website. However, familiarity with basic computer programmes like MS Word and email is essential.

Role

  • Volunteer interns will have the opportunity to work on all areas of the website and to become familiar with the issues involved in producing effective information about law-related issues to the public.
  • You will have the opportunity to develop responsibility for updating a series of Advicenow guides - working with writers and peer reviewers to ensure the guides are accurate, engaging, easy-to-read, as helpful as possible, and enable action.
  • You will also have the opportunity to develop responsibility for one area of the information service. You will research what information is available on the internet (in any format including mp3s and video files), rate it according to Advicenow criteria, and decide whether to include it on our database.
  • You will be involved in managing and editing information on the website and will learn how to use a content management system.
  • You will have opportunities to monitor website statistics and feedback, and write management reports.

You will join Advicenow's team of 6 people and will be based at their offices near Liverpool Street, London.

Advicenow is able to offer volunteer interns:

  • Expenses up to a maximum of £151 a month (this would pay for a Travelcard Zones 1-2 and £4 for lunch).
  • Supervision and support throughout the volunteer internship.

Volunteer internships are usually offered on a 3-day-a-week basis but we can be flexible if you have work, study or family commitments.
