Is the law going to change?
Don't hold your breath
For a while, it looked like the law might be changed. The Law Commission was asked to investigate whether the law needed to be changed to give cohabiting couples more rights when there relationship ends, or when one partner dies without leaving a will. They very sensibly concluded that it did - but it doesn't look likely to happen as there is a lack of political will. In fact the government is instead emphasising the importance of marriage.
So what does this mean?
In practice this means don't hold your breath. It now looks very unlikely that the law will change any time soon.
So, where does that leave me?
You need to take steps to protect yourself and your partner now. To find out what simple steps you should take, look at the LivingTogether introduction page or go to LivingTogether section for more detail.
