Digital exclusion and Roma communities in the context of child protection

We have published a new report on issues of digital exclusion faced by Roma in their interactions with children’s services and the English legal system during care proceedings, and how these have been exacerbated by the move to digital technology during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The report was based on research we carried out, including surveys of social workers and family lawyers working with Roma and other vulnerable groups, and semi structured interviews with staff and community members from Roma organisations. This preliminary research also helped us develop resources for Roma families and professionals working with these communities.

Our report highlighted areas of concern and made recommendations for change to improve the situation for Roma and other vulnerable groups experiencing care proceedings.

Our report was also submitted as evidence for the rapid consultation on remote, hybrid and in-person hearings in the family justice system. We are delighted that some of our report's findings were included in the consulation report by Nuffield Family Justice Observatory.
