As the pandemic and Brexit continued to impact so many people’s lives, we worked with our users and others – lawyers, advisors, academics and volunteers – who share our passion for social justice. As the need for legal help increased and the funding for that help diminished, Law for Life focused its efforts on meeting the needs of the most vulnerable, and on doing so in partnership with others both nationally and locally.

Law for Life strives for social justice by legally empowering individuals and communities. We believe everyone should be equipped with the knowledge, confidence and skills needed to deal with the law-related issues they are likely to encounter in the course of their lives. Law for Life’s Advicenow site had a year of accolades, winning both the Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year (LALY) Access to Justice through IT award, and a Plain English award for our popular guide How to win a PIP appeal.

Law for Life works to ensure that citizens are equipped with the knowledge, confidence and skills needed to deal with the law-related issues they are likely to encounter in the course of their lives. In 2016–17 Law for Life’s award-winning website Advicenow provided information and support to over a million people. Advicenow’s curated information service brings together 1,600 pieces of public legal information from over 250 UK websites.

In our fifth year of operation, we have focused on the growing need for people facing the prospect of court proceedings alone, without a lawyer, to receive the help we can offer through quality assured information, videos to build skills and confidence and tools to enable engagement. Working closely with our partners at LawWorks, Royal Courts of Justice Advice Bureau, Personal Support Unit, Bar Pro Bono Unit and the Access to Justice Foundation we are reaching many more litigants in person under the national Litigant in Person Support Strategy.
