We made this short film because we know that going to court without a solicitor can be a very frightening and stressful experience and we want to help.

It looks at the questions people who have represented themselves told us they worried about most, and shows you simple tips that you can use to put your side as well as you can.

We made this film in 2019 but the guidance in it is up to date today.

At a glance - tips for going to the family court

  • Preparation - organise your paperwork, take copies of anything you want to show the judge and the other people involved. Plan what you want to say and practise at home. Wear something smart if you can - be sure to look clean and tidy.
  • Getting to court - give yourself plenty of time to get there and arrive at least 30 minutes early. Don't take your children unless you have been specifically told to.
  • Speaking in court - speak slowly and clearly in plain English. Don't interrupt - raise your hand if you have something you want to say.
  • Answering questions - Stay calm, listen carefully and give brief, clear answers. If you don't understand, just say so.
  • Keep calm - try to stay calm and be polite to the judge, court staff, and your ex, even when you feel upset or frustrated.

This really made me think! I will try an compose myself in court. I feel less nervous now after seeing this, thank you!

Truly invaluable - Thank you!
Watching your film helped me realise things that I stood no chance of comprehending otherwise because of being neurodivergent. I cannot thank you enough for your idea to make and put this film on your website. Bless you. It speaks volumes about how genuinely committed you are to helping "litigants-in-person" use the posh expression for us who cannot afford representation!
