Free online workshop

The workshop will take place on Tuesday 14th July 11am - 12.30pm

This workshop aims to build the skills and confidence of frontline staff and volunteers in making effective referrals for support under Section 17 of the Children Act 1989 for families with NRPF. It is aimed at staff and volunteers who already have a basic knowledge of Section 17 and want to strengthen their practice in this complex area of casework. A clear, well-evidenced referral can make a significant difference to whether a local authority agrees to provide Section 17 support.

This workshop will help you:

  • Recap the support available for destitute families under Section 17.
  • Strengthen your understanding of how to ask the right questions and gather relevant information from clients prior to a referral.
  • Gain knowledge of what evidence is needed to support a referral.
Draft an effective Section 17 referral.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is for staff and volunteers from community, voluntary sector and grassroots organisations in England who regularly support families with NRPF. We ask that participants have previously attended Advicenow's workshop on Local Authority Support for Migrants with NRPF, or have a basic working knowledge of Section 17. It is designed to build on existing knowledge - basic understanding of Section 17 eligibility will be assumed.

Due to funding requirements, we are unable to offer spaces to local authority staff, housing providers (including housing associations), estate agents, or organisations that charge a fee for frontline service provision. This workshop covers relevant law in England only.

The workshop is free, but spaces are limited to a maximum of two participants per organisation. We will prioritise staff and volunteers from community, voluntary and grassroots organisations.
