This workshop aims to build the skills and confidence of frontline staff and volunteers in making effective referrals for support under Section 17 of the Children Act 1989 for families with NRPF. It is aimed at staff and volunteers who already have a basic knowledge of Section 17 and want to strengthen their practice in this complex area of casework. A clear, well-evidenced referral can make a significant difference to whether a local authority agrees to provide Section 17 support.

This workshop will help you:

Recap the support available for destitute families under Section 17.
Strengthen your understanding of how to ask the right questions and gather relevant information from clients prior to a referral.
Gain knowledge of what evidence is needed to support a referral.
Draft an effective Section 17 referral.
